Working out where to put a corner sofa is mostly about reading the room first. Doors, the path people walk, the window, the television and the fireplace decide where an L-shape can sit comfortably, and which way its chaise should point.

This guide covers how to place a corner sofa in a room that is not a simple box: the through-lounge, open-plan living and the period room with a bay window or chimney breast. It finishes with corner sofa which side, answered from your own floor plan.

Reading your room

Before you move anything, draw a quick plan or stand in the doorway and note four things.

  1. Doors and the main path. The busiest route through the room should stay clear of the chaise.
  2. The focal point. Usually the television, a fireplace or a view. The longest run of seating should face it.
  3. Light and heat. A chaise pushed hard against a radiator blocks heat, and a sofa across a window can make the room feel darker.
  4. The return wall. Find where the short arm of the L will land: against a second wall, or as a deliberate open edge.

Then mark the sofa's footprint on the floor with masking tape, using the overall width and depth from the product page. If you keep stepping over the tape, the sofa is in the wrong place. Our guide to how to measure a room for a corner sofa walks through the tape method in more detail, and will a corner sofa fit through my door covers the route in.

As a working guide, leave about 60 to 90 cm of clear floor on the main path past the sofa and coffee table.

Through-lounges

The through-lounge, where two rooms have been knocked into one long space, is common in British terraces and semis, usually with a window at each end and a door part-way along one side. Pushing the sofa against the longest wall often leaves a narrow corridor down one side and a lot of unused floor.

Two layouts tend to work better.

  • Split the room into two zones. Put the corner sofa in the front half facing the television or fireplace, and use the back half for dining or a desk. The back of the sofa's long side becomes the soft boundary between the two areas.
  • Chaise as the divider. Point the chaise towards the middle of the room so it marks where the lounge ends. Keep the walkway on the open side of the chaise, not squeezed between the sofa and a wall.

A long corner suits a through-lounge because there is length to spare. The Fairhaven Long M84 above is listed at 345 cm wide and 205 cm deep, so in a room that is long but not especially wide, check that the depth still leaves your walkway once the coffee table is in. For more on spacing, see how much space between a sofa and a TV.

Open-plan zones

In an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, the corner sofa also tells people where the lounge begins. Floating it away from the walls is often the most comfortable answer.

  • Back to the kitchen. Set the long side with its back to the kitchen or dining table, facing the television or garden. The sofa reads as a clear boundary and the cook can still join the conversation.
  • Finish the back. When a sofa floats, its back is on show. A slim console table or a pair of lamps behind it makes it look intentional.
  • Anchor with a rug. A rug large enough for at least the front feet of the sofa ties the zone together.
  • Keep the kitchen route clear. Keep the chaise off the path between the kitchen, the garden doors and the hallway.

If the sofa doubles as a guest bed, leave floor in front of it for the pull-out section, and check the coffee table can move out of the way.

For larger open-plan rooms, a U-shaped sofa can define the lounge on three sides. It works best when the open end faces the television and there is space to walk round the outside of both chaise ends. Measure carefully, because a U-shape takes up a lot of floor in both directions.

Bay windows and chimney breasts

Bay windows. A corner sofa rarely fits inside a bay, and pushing it across the opening blocks light and usually a radiator underneath. Two better options:

  • Keep the bay for a chair, a reading lamp or a small table, and place the corner sofa on the two walls facing it, so the window becomes part of the view.
  • In a room where the bay is the only long wall, set the sofa's long side a little forward of the bay with the chaise running along the side wall. Leave room behind to open curtains and reach the radiator.

Chimney breasts. A corner sofa will not tuck into an alcove, so treat the chimney breast as the focal point, with or without a television nearby. Face the long run of the sofa towards it and let the chaise turn along the wall away from the door.

If a radiator sits on the only workable wall, our guide to putting a sofa in front of a radiator covers the gap to leave and some alternatives. For tighter period rooms, small living room layouts with a corner sofa has four layouts that work.

Left or right hand revisited

Once you know where the sofa will go, the hand of the corner usually decides itself. At SOFGO the rule is simple: stand facing the sofa. If the long chaise section is on your left, it is a left corner; if it is on your right, it is a right corner. It costs the same either way.

Stand in the doorway, look at your taped outline and ask three questions.

  1. Does the chaise block the door or the main path? If so, swap sides.
  2. Does the long side face the focal point? In a through-lounge or open-plan room, the long side usually faces the television or fireplace and the chaise points into the room.
  3. Is the chaise over a radiator or in front of a window you open often? Swap sides if it is.

Many SOFGO corners, including the Fairhaven range, list a reversible corner, so they can be built either way. Some are sold as left or right corner only, so check the name and features before ordering. For a fuller walk-through, see left or right hand corner sofa.

For a shorter run, the Fairhaven Corner Sofa Bed with Storage M84 is £1,199 (Easy Clean £1,398), listed at 275 cm wide and 205 cm deep.

FAQs

Where is the best place to put a corner sofa?

Usually on the two walls facing your focal point, with the chaise pointing away from the door. In long or open-plan rooms, floating the sofa so its back marks the edge of the lounge often works better than pushing it against a wall.

How do I place a corner sofa in a through-lounge?

Use the sofa to split the room. Put it in one half facing the television or fireplace, keep the other half for dining or a desk, and leave about 60 to 90 cm of clear floor on the main path past it.

Can a corner sofa go in the middle of an open-plan room?

Yes. Set the long side with its back to the kitchen or dining area, anchor it with a rug and keep the chaise off the main route through the room.

Should a corner sofa go in front of a bay window?

It is usually better not to block a bay. Use the bay for a chair or table and place the corner sofa facing it, or set the sofa slightly forward with room behind for curtains and any radiator.

Which side should the chaise be on?

Usually on the side away from the door and the main walkway, with the long side facing the focal point. If the chaise is on your left as you stand facing the sofa, you need a left corner.
