A corner sofa can make a small living room feel planned rather than cramped — if you put it in the right place. The mistake is to start with the sofa and then try to fit the TV, doors and walkways around it. Start with how you move through the room, then choose a layout that keeps those paths clear.

This guide covers where to put a corner sofa in a small living room, four layouts that work, how to keep walkways clear, and simple ways to make the room feel larger — with a few compact SOFGO corner sofa beds that suit tight footprints.

Start with the doors and the TV

Before you pick a corner side or a sofa size, mark three things on a rough floor plan (graph paper or a phone sketch is enough):

  1. Every door and how it swings. Note the front door if it opens into the room, cupboard doors, and the kitchen or hallway opening.
  2. The TV wall or the place the screen will live. The chaise and the main seats need a clear view without people walking through the picture.
  3. The main walkway. Usually that is the path from the door to the sofa, and from the sofa to the kitchen or stairs.

Then measure the room properly. Our guide on how to measure a room for a corner sofa covers overall size, sofa-bed pull-out space and gaps for radiators. If the sofa has to come up stairs or through a narrow hall, also read will a corner sofa fit through my door?.

Left or right hand matters in a small room. Some models build either way; others are fixed. Our guide to left or right hand corner sofas explains how to choose the side so the chaise does not block a door.

Four layouts that work

These four patterns cover most UK flats and terraces. Adapt the corner side to your room; the idea is the same.

1. Corner by the long wall, TV opposite

Put the corner of the sofa into the corner of the room, with the long seat along the longest wall and the chaise returning along the shorter wall. Place the TV on the wall that faces the main seats.

This is the classic small-room layout. It keeps the centre free for a compact coffee table and a clear path past the chaise, and it works well when the door is on the opposite short wall.

Compact models help here. The Linden Bay Corner Sofa Bed With Storage M99 is listed at 213 × 132 cm, and the Verity Corner Sofa Bed With Storage M84 at 222 cm wide and 133 cm deep. Both build left or right handed. Each is £779.

2. Chaise as a soft room divider

In an open-plan lounge-diner, float the corner sofa so the chaise back forms a low wall between the living zone and the dining table or kitchen. The main seats still face the TV. Leave enough space behind the chaise to walk past with a tray (about 70–80 cm if you can), and use a small or nesting coffee table. Browse our coffee tables for compact options.

3. Sofa under the window, TV on the return wall

If the best natural light is on one wall, put the long seat under the window and the chaise along the adjacent wall, with the TV on the third wall. You get daylight on the seating without pointing the screen into glare. Leave a gap above any radiator under the sill, and check that curtains or blinds still clear the back cushions.

4. Compact corner for a box room or studio

In a very small room, choose a mini or compact corner and keep other furniture to a minimum: one small table, one lamp, and storage inside the sofa. Our guide to small corner sofa beds with storage groups the more compact models together.

Keeping walkways clear

In a small living room, the walkway is as important as the sofa.

  • Door swing: Mark the chaise with tape and open every door fully. If a door hits the arm, swap the corner side or pull the sofa a few centimetres off the wall.
  • Path past the coffee table: Aim for about 40–45 cm between the sofa front and the table, plus room on the outer side so you are not shuffling sideways.
  • Sofa bed clearance: Mark the open bed on the floor before you order so guests can get in and out without moving the table every time.
  • Radiators and sockets: Keep fabric off hot panels and leave access to plugs you use often.

Tape the sofa outline on the floor for a day if you can — it is the quickest way to spot a blocked route before delivery.

Making the room feel larger

Layout does more for a small room than buying less furniture — but a few habits help:

  • Lift the sofa visually. Slim metal legs and space under the frame let the floor continue.
  • Keep the centre light. One small table beats a large coffee table that fills the only clear floor.
  • Match the corner to the light. Pale fabric near a window keeps the seating from looking heavy.
  • Use the wall for the TV. A wall mount frees the floor where a cabinet would sit.
  • Edit side tables. One nesting set that slides together is often enough.

If your room is open to the kitchen, a larger corner like the Fairhaven M84 can still work when the chaise defines the living zone and the walkway runs behind or beside it. For tighter rooms, stay with the mini and compact sizes.

Storage that does not crowd

Small rooms suffer when storage is added as extra furniture. A corner sofa bed with a full-width storage compartment under the seat keeps bedding, throws and cushions off the floor.

Look for storage inside the sofa (so you do not need a separate ottoman), a coffee table with a lower shelf or a nesting set, and wall shelves for books and display. The Verity, Linden Bay, Fairhaven Mini, Goldcrest Mini and Fairhaven models linked here all list a pull-out sleeping area and a full-width storage compartment. Check the product page for the compartment size if you plan to store a duvet set.

FAQs

Where should I put a corner sofa in a small living room?

Start with the doors, the TV and the main walkway. In most small rooms, the corner of the sofa goes into a room corner, with the long seat along the longest wall and the TV opposite the main seats. Swap the corner side if a door swing or radiator gets in the way.

How much space do I need around a corner sofa?

Leave enough room for door swings, for legs between the sofa and the coffee table (about 40–45 cm is a comfortable starting point), and for the bed to pull out if you have a sofa bed. Tape the footprint on the floor to test it.

What size corner sofa suits a small living room?

Compare overall width and depth on each product page. Compact examples in this guide include Linden Bay M99 (213 × 132 cm), Verity M84 (222 × 133 cm) and Goldcrest Mini K31 (235 × 150 × 91 cm). Our small corner sofa bed guide lists more options.

Should the chaise face the window or the TV?

Face the main seats toward the TV. Put the chaise where it does not block a door and where it either catches the light or gently divides an open-plan space. Comfort for everyday sitting comes first; the chaise is secondary seating.

Can a corner sofa work in an open-plan flat?

Yes. Use the chaise back as a soft divider between living and dining, keep a clear walkway behind or beside it, and choose a coffee table that can tuck away when you need the floor.

How do I choose left or right hand in a small room?

Stand at the doorway and decide which wall takes the long seat; the chaise returns along the other wall. Reversible models can be built either way; fixed ones say left or right corner only. See our left or right hand guide.
