How Much Space Between a Sofa and a TV?
By Alex at SOFGO ·

Planning how much space between sofa and tv is less about a single magic number and more about three everyday checks: can you watch without craning your neck, can people walk past without shuffling, and does a coffee table still leave room for feet and trays.
This guide covers comfortable viewing distance in a typical UK living room, walkways and coffee-table clearance, how a corner sofa sits against a TV wall, and what to do when the room is small. Use a tape measure on the floor before you order — photos compress distance.
Comfortable viewing distance
Start with where you actually sit, not with a chart on a box.
- Sit where the sofa will go (or mark it with tape) and look at the TV wall at a normal evening height.
- Check eye level. The centre of the screen should feel roughly level with your eyes when you lean back. A TV that sits too high forces your chin up; too low and the chaise or coffee table can block the bottom of the picture.
- Check the whole room, not just the straight line. On a corner sofa the long side and the chaise both face the room differently. People on the chaise often sit slightly angled — leave a little extra so they are not staring past the edge of the screen.
- Leave headroom for lamps and shelves. A media unit, soundbar or low cabinet eats a few centimetres in front of the wall; measure from the front of that furniture, not from the plaster.
If you are asking how far should couch be from tv in a busy family room, comfort usually beats a formula. Move a dining chair to the planned sofa line for an evening and notice whether conversation still works when the screen is on. For measuring the sofa footprint itself, see how to measure a room for a corner sofa.

Walkways and coffee tables
How much space around a sofa matters as much as the gap to the screen. People need a clear path from the door to the seats, and from the seats to the kitchen or hallway, without turning sideways every time.
Practical UK living-room clearances that work in most homes:
- Main walkway past the sofa: aim for about 60–90 cm of clear floor. Under 60 cm feels tight with a laundry basket or a child in tow; more than 90 cm is lovely if the room allows it.
- Coffee table to sofa seat edge: leave enough for knees and a tray — many rooms settle around a hand’s width to a forearm, then check you can still stand up without shoving the table.
- TV wall to coffee table: keep the table out of the main path between sofa and screen so nobody steps over it mid-episode.
- Side tables and lamps: they count toward the walkway. Measure with them in place, not in the catalogue photo.
A corner sofa changes the coffee-table shape. An L-shape often suits a rectangular or nested set placed in the open angle, rather than a large square that blocks both seats. For sizing help, see what size coffee table for a corner sofa and browse coffee tables.

Corner sofas and TV walls
A corner sofa is happiest when the long back sits against one wall and the chaise runs along another, or when the chaise floats to define a zone in an open-plan space. The TV usually belongs on the wall the long seats face.
Checklist before you commit:
- Pick the corner side. Stand facing where the sofa will go: chaise on your left means a left-hand corner. See left or right hand corner sofa.
- Decide which wall holds the TV. Prefer the wall opposite the longest seating run so most seats share a similar view.
- Keep the chaise from blocking the screen. If the chaise points toward the TV wall, sit on it (or tape the outline) and check the sightline.
- Plan sockets and cable runs along the TV wall so the sofa does not sit over a trail of extension leads.
- Remember the bed open. On a sofa bed, the pull-out needs clear floor toward the room — usually away from the TV wall. Leave that zone free of a heavy table you cannot move.
If the only solid wall for the TV is beside the chaise, a smaller media unit and a slight sofa angle can work better than forcing a straight-on layout. For compact rooms, see small living room layout with a corner sofa and how to style a corner sofa.
Small rooms
In a small lounge the sofa–TV gap shrinks, so every centimetre of furniture depth counts.
- Choose a shallower depth where you can. Compare listed depths on the product page (for example Linden Bay at 132 cm overall depth versus deeper chaise models) rather than judging from a wide-angle photo.
- Float the TV on the wall with a slim bracket or a shallow unit so the screen sits closer to the plaster than a deep cabinet would allow.
- Use a nesting or oblong coffee table you can push aside when the sofa bed opens or when guests need a wider walkway.
- Keep one clear diagonal from the door to the window or garden doors so the room still feels walkable.
- Test the open bed. Mark the sleeping area on the floor (Linden Bay lists 168 × 132 cm; Fairhaven M84 lists 123 × 193 cm) and confirm the TV stand is outside that rectangle.

FAQs
How much space between sofa and TV do I need?
Enough that you can watch without tilting your head, walk past without turning sideways, and still use a coffee table. Mark the sofa outline on the floor, sit at that line for an evening, and adjust before you order. There is no single number that suits every UK living room.
How much space around a sofa should I leave for walkways?
About 60–90 cm on the main path past the sofa works in most homes. Leave knee room to the coffee table and keep side tables inside your measurements, not as an afterthought.
How far should a couch be from the TV in a small room?
As far as the room allows while keeping a walkable route. Favour a shallower sofa depth, a slim TV setup and a table you can move when the sofa bed opens. See small living room layout with a corner sofa.
Does a corner sofa need more space from the TV than a straight sofa?
Not always, but the chaise changes sightlines. Check the view from both the long seats and the chaise, and keep the open bed zone clear of the TV wall.
Where should the coffee table sit with a corner sofa?
In the open angle of the L, with clearance to the seat edges and a clear path to the door. Size tips are in what size coffee table for a corner sofa.
