Sofa Bed vs Guest Bed: Which Is Better for Your Home?
By Alex at SOFGO ·

If you have people to stay, you need somewhere for them to sleep. The question is whether that should be a sofa bed in a room you already use, or a proper bed kept for guests. Both are sensible answers. The right one depends on how often people stay, how much space you have and what you want the room to do the rest of the year.
This guide compares the two honestly, using the details listed on our own product pages, so you can decide which suits your home before you spend anything.
How often will guests stay?
Start here, because it settles more than anything else.
- A few nights a year. If family visit at Christmas and a friend stays now and then, a sofa bed usually makes more sense. The room works as a living room, snug or study for the other 360-odd days, and the bed is there when you need it.
- Every month or so. Both routes work. A sofa bed is still practical if the room is in daily use; a guest bed is easier if the room would otherwise sit empty.
- Every week, or for weeks at a time. If someone stays often, for example a grown-up child home at weekends or a relative staying for a long spell, a dedicated bed with a mattress chosen for nightly sleep is the more comfortable long-term choice, provided you have a room to give it.
It also helps to think about who stays. Two adults sharing need a bed big enough for two. Each corner sofa bed in this guide lists a "pull-out sleeping area for two adults" on its product page, but check the sleeping area sizes listed before you buy.
Space: one room doing two jobs
This is where a sofa bed earns its place. A guest bed needs a room, or at least a big part of one, that does nothing else most of the time. A sofa bed lets one room do two jobs: seating by day, a bed when someone stays.
That matters in homes where every room counts. A box room that doubles as a home office, a through-lounge or a snug can all take a sofa bed without giving up their everyday use. A corner sofa bed with a chaise also gives you more seating than a two- or three-seater, which helps when the house is full.
Two measurements matter with a sofa bed:
- The sofa itself, using the overall width, depth and height on the product page.
- The open bed. Leave room in front of the sofa for the pull-out section, plus space to walk round it and get in and out. A coffee table may need to move each night.
Our guide on how to measure a room for a corner sofa walks through the floor plan step by step.
A guest bed is simpler to measure but needs the room to be clear for good. A double frame plus space to walk round both sides takes up most of a small bedroom. Our bed pages list each frame's overall size, and these designer frames are generous: the Aldermere Curved Bed, for example, is listed at 240 × 207 × 92 cm for the double.

Comfort compared honestly
A dedicated bed will usually be the more comfortable option for regular sleeping, for one simple reason: you choose the mattress. A proper mattress on a slatted base is designed for sleeping night after night. Our designer beds have a "supportive slatted mattress base", and the pages note "mattress sold separately", so you can pick the firmness and size that suit your guests.
A sofa bed has to be good at two things, sitting and sleeping, so it is always a balance. On our corner sofa beds, the sleeping surface is the seat and the pull-out section, opened with the click-clack mechanism listed on the page. How it feels depends on the build, so read what each page says. The Fairhaven, for instance, has seat pads "filled with high-resilience foam and topped with a softer comfort layer", and the Verity has "a serpentine spring base" under the cushions.
Size matters too. Compare the listed sleeping area with standard UK mattress sizes: a single is 90 × 190 cm, a small double 120 × 190 cm and a double 135 × 190 cm. The Fairhaven's listed sleeping area of 123 × 193 cm sits between a small double and a double. The Goldcrest Mini (£699) lists a sleeping area of 218 × 130 cm.
A few simple things make any sofa bed more comfortable for a guest:
- a mattress topper, which also folds away
- a fitted sheet and a proper duvet and pillows, not just a throw
- making the bed up before your guest is tired, so nobody struggles with the mechanism late at night
If you want to compare mechanisms, our guide to click-clack, pull-out and electric sofa beds explains how each one opens.
Storage and tidiness
A spare bed needs spare bedding, and that bedding has to live somewhere.
Every corner sofa bed mentioned in this guide lists a "full-width storage compartment under the seat". That means the duvet, pillows and sheets can be kept in the sofa itself, ready for the next visit, and the room goes back to being a living room as soon as the bed is folded away. Our guide on what fits in a sofa bed storage chaise covers what to store and how to keep it fresh.
A guest bed is tidy in a different way. It can stay made up, so there is nothing to put away between visits. The trade-off is that the room is always a bedroom. Our designer bed pages do not list built-in storage, so you would need a chest of drawers, a wardrobe or space under the bed for the spare bedding.

Cost of each route
The key point is that a sofa bed is one purchase doing two jobs. You would buy a sofa for the room anyway, so the bed comes as part of it.
A guest bed is a separate purchase, and the frame is only part of it:
- The frame. Our designer beds currently start at £849 for the Thornbury Cloud Bed, with the Aldermere Curved Bed at £899.
- The mattress. Sold separately, so add it to your budget.
- The room. If the room would otherwise be a study, a playroom or a snug, that is a cost too, even if it is not on a receipt.
- Seating. You still need a sofa somewhere else in the house.
On the sofa bed side, our corner sofa beds with storage cover a wide range. The Verity M84 is £779 and the Fairhaven M84 is £1,199, with the Fairhaven M04 pictured above at £1,199.
Delivery is free to most of mainland UK on both routes, and so is assembly in the room you choose; our delivery page lists the few charges and areas that differ. You can pay by card or with Klarna or Clearpay (subject to eligibility and status), and the in-stock sofa beds pictured here also offer pay on delivery (cash or bank transfer), as each product page shows.
Timing is part of the cost as well. Our designer beds are "Made to order — 12–15 weeks", so a bed ordered in mid-October would not arrive until the new year. Many of our corner sofa beds are shown as in stock, and the Goldcrest Mini page shows "Delivery in 2–5 weeks". Always check the product page before you order. If you are planning for December visitors, our guide to sofa beds for Christmas guests covers the timing in more detail.
Our verdict by home type
- Flat or small house with no spare room: a sofa bed, without question. It is the only way to have a bed without losing a room.
- Home with a box room used as an office or snug: a sofa bed, ideally a compact corner model with storage, so the room keeps working day to day. Our guide on choosing a sofa bed for a guest room helps you pick one.
- Family home where the living room takes overflow at busy times: a corner sofa bed in the lounge gives you extra seating for everyone and a bed for the last guest standing.
- Home with a true spare bedroom and frequent or long stays: a guest bed with a good mattress is the more comfortable choice, as long as the room has nothing else to do.
- Someone sleeping on it most nights: look for a sofa bed built for daily use, or choose a bed. Our guide to corner sofa beds for everyday use explains what to look for.
FAQs
Is a sofa bed worth it?
For most homes that host a few times a year, yes. It gives you seating every day and a bed when you need it, in a single purchase, and our corner sofa beds add a storage compartment for the bedding.
Is a sofa bed or a guest bed more comfortable?
A dedicated bed with a mattress you choose is usually more comfortable for regular sleeping. A sofa bed is designed to balance sitting and sleeping, which suits occasional guests well. Check the sleeping area listed on the product page and add a topper for extra comfort.
How much space does a sofa bed need when it is open?
Allow for the sofa's overall size plus the pull-out section in front, and enough room to walk round it. Measure with the bed open in mind, not just the sofa.
Do your beds come with a mattress?
No. Our designer bed pages say "mattress sold separately". Each frame has a slatted mattress base.
Can two adults sleep on a corner sofa bed?
Each corner sofa bed in this guide lists a "pull-out sleeping area for two adults". Check the sleeping area sizes on the product page, where they are given, against the mattress sizes you are used to.
Is delivery and assembly free?
Yes, to most of mainland UK, for both our sofa beds and our beds, with free assembly in the room you choose. Our delivery page has the full details.
