A guest room rarely has one job. Most of the year it's a home office, a hobby room or the place the ironing board lives. Then someone comes to stay, and it needs to become a comfortable bedroom in a few minutes. A sofa bed is the obvious answer, but the wrong one can leave guests with a cramped bed and you with a room you can't use the rest of the time.

This guide walks through what to check before you buy: the space the bed needs when it's open, the sleeping area, the mechanism, where the bedding goes, and the fabric. At the end, we compare the SOFGO sofa beds that suit guest and spare rooms best.

Start with how the room is used day to day

Before you look at a single sofa, be honest about how often it will be a bed.

  • A few nights a year. Visiting family at Christmas or a friend after a night out. Here, comfort as a sofa matters most, because that's how it will be used nearly all the time.
  • Most weekends. Grown-up children home from university, or regular visitors. The bed needs to open quickly and without a fight, and the bedding needs a home close by.
  • Every night. If someone will sleep on it nightly, a sofa bed is a compromise. A proper bed may serve them better.

For the first two, a sofa bed makes a lot of sense. It gives you a room that works hard all year and still sleeps two when you need it.

Measure the room with the bed open

This is the step people skip. A sofa bed that fits neatly against the wall as a sofa can take up far more floor once it's open.

  1. Measure the wall run. From the corner to the nearest obstacle, such as a door frame, a radiator or a desk. The sofa's overall width must fit inside this, ideally with a little room to spare.
  2. Measure the depth into the room. From the back wall to whatever sits opposite. Take away the sofa's depth to see how much floor is left.
  3. Tape out the open bed. Use masking tape to mark the full open footprint on the floor. Check the door still opens, drawers can be reached and there's a clear route to the door at night. In a home office, decide where the desk chair goes when the bed is out.

Where a product page doesn't list the open size, email us with the sofa name and we'll confirm it. Our small corner sofa bed guide has worked examples for tight rooms, and our guide to whether a corner sofa will fit through your door covers the route in.

Check the sleeping area, not just the sofa size

The listed sofa size tells you how much room it takes up. The sleeping area tells you how well your guests will sleep. They're not the same thing.

For reference, a standard UK single mattress is 90 × 190 cm, a small double is 120 × 190 cm and a standard double is 135 × 190 cm. Compare a sofa bed's listed sleeping area with these, and with your guests' height.

All four product pages describe a pull-out sleeping area for two adults. For taller guests, the longer the listed sleeping area, the better. If you often host two adults, look for a width close to a small double or more.

Choose a mechanism your guests can manage

If a sofa bed is awkward to open, it tends not to get opened, and guests end up sleeping on the sofa as it is.

  • Click-clack backs fold flat when you lift and lower them. They're quick and need no extra floor in front beyond the seat itself.
  • Pull-out sections slide forward from under the seat to extend the sleeping surface. They need clear floor in front, which is why taping out the open footprint matters.

Many of our corner sofa beds, including Verity, Linden Bay and Goldcrest, list both a click-clack mechanism and a pull-out sleeping area on their product pages. Try the sequence once when your sofa arrives, so you can show a guest how it works rather than leaving them to work it out at bedtime.

Plan where the bedding lives

A guest room with nowhere to put the duvet soon has a duvet on the floor. Built-in storage solves that.

  • Keep a complete guest set inside: a duvet, two pillows, a fitted sheet and a spare throw.
  • Check the listed compartment size where there is one. The Goldcrest Mini, for example, lists a storage compartment of 130 × 90 × 41 cm, which is room for a double duvet and pillows.
  • Keep the wall above the chaise clear of low shelves, so the storage lid can lift fully.

Pick a fabric for the whole year, not just the visit

In a room that's an office or a den most of the time, the sofa gets everyday use: coffee at the desk, children watching films, the dog finding a warm spot.

  • Mid-tones are forgiving. Mid grey, oatmeal and deeper colours hide everyday marks better than very pale fabrics.
  • Tightly woven fabrics stand up better to pets and bags than loose, loopy textures. Some of our standard fabrics, such as the Linden Bay's, are described on the product page as tightly woven and pet-friendly.
  • Consider Easy Clean. Every sofa bed in this guide can be ordered in our water- and pet-resistant Easy Clean fabric for a fixed £199 extra. Our guide to pet-friendly sofas and Easy Clean fabric explains what it can and can't do.

Our sofa beds for guest and spare rooms

Linden Bay (£779) is the smallest corner sofa bed we list, at 213 × 132 cm, with a listed sleeping area of 168 × 132 cm. It's reversible and has a full-width storage compartment. It suits a box room or a small study where every centimetre counts.

Verity (£779) is only slightly wider, at 222 × 133 cm, with a serpentine spring base under the cushions and seat pads in high-resilience foam with a softer comfort layer. It's a good choice if the room is used as a snug most evenings, because it sits like a proper sofa.

Goldcrest Mini (£699) is made to order, so there's a wider choice of colours, and it has the longest listed sleeping area of the compact models, at 218 × 130 cm. If your guests are tall, start here. The product page shows the delivery window.

Goldcrest (£799 in K19) is the one for a larger room that doubles as a second lounge. At 260 cm wide with a 150 cm chaise, it seats a family, and it has a hardwood-braced frame, a full-width storage compartment and a pull-out sleeping area for two adults. If you want more seating still, the U Shape Goldcrest (£999, 352 × 152 cm) has two storage compartments and extends into a double bed.

All four compact and standard models above are reversible, so you can build them left or right handed to suit the room. If you're not sure which side you need, our left or right hand corner sofa guide explains the simple rule.

Small touches that make guests comfortable

  • Add a mattress topper for stays of more than a night or two. It makes a sofa bed feel more like a bed.
  • Leave a lamp within reach of the bed, with somewhere to put a phone and a glass of water.
  • Make the bed up before they arrive if you can. It makes a spare room feel like a proper guest room.

FAQs

What size sofa bed do I need for a guest room?

Measure the wall and the depth of the room, then tape out the bed when it's open. The open footprint, not the sofa size, decides whether it fits. For two adults, look for a listed sleeping area close to a small double (120 × 190 cm) or larger.

Is a corner sofa bed a good choice for a guest room?

It is if the room is used as a lounge, office or den most of the time. You get comfortable seating every day, a bed for two when you need it and, on many models, built-in storage for the bedding.

Do SOFGO sofa beds come with storage?

All of the corner sofa beds in this guide have a full-width storage compartment under the seat, and the U Shape Goldcrest has two. Where a product page doesn't list the compartment size, ask us and we'll check.

Tell us about your spare room and we'll help you choose. Send a message with the wall length, the room depth and where the door is, and our team will suggest the models that fit. Every order includes free UK mainland delivery and free assembly in the room of your choice, with the packaging taken away.
