If you're shopping for a sofa in West Yorkshire, you have two broad options. You can go to a showroom, sit on a few and order there. Or you can buy direct online from a retailer with no shop floor, and do your checking at home with a tape measure and the product page.

Neither is right for everyone. This guide compares the two honestly, from pricing and fabric to delivery, and lists the questions worth asking whoever you buy from.

First, a word about us. SOFGO is a UK online furniture retailer, and we don't have a showroom. Our registered office is at 248 Lockwood Road in Huddersfield, but it isn't a shop or a showroom. Everything is chosen and ordered online, or by email.

How showroom and warehouse-direct pricing differ

Every sofa price covers more than the sofa itself. With a showroom, that includes the building, the display pieces and the staff on the floor. With an online retailer, the money goes on the website, photography, answering questions and delivery instead.

That's how our homepage describes the way we sell: "Warehouse-direct prices", with "No showrooms, no middlemen — you pay for the sofa, not for a retail floor." It describes how SOFGO works. It isn't a claim about anyone else's prices, which we don't know and won't guess at. The fair test is always like for like.

To compare two sofas properly, line up:

  • Size and shape: overall width, depth and height, and whether it's a corner, a U-shape or a straight sofa.
  • Features and fabric: a pull-out bed, storage, and any stain-resistant upgrade.
  • The total delivered price: VAT, delivery, carrying it upstairs, assembly and taking the packaging away.

Our prices include VAT. Easy Clean, our water and pet resistant weave, is a fixed £199 upgrade on the standard fabric. Delivery is free to most of mainland UK, and the few charges that can apply are covered below.

Grey flecked woven Granby corner sofa bed with a black base and the corner on the left, beside a white coffee table in a loft-style living room
Granby Corner Sleeper with Storage B01/S11, £899 (view product). A grey flecked woven corner sofa bed with a black base, shown with the corner on the left as you face it (the product page lets you choose a left or right corner). Listed at 235 × 162 × 90 cm, with a storage compartment under the seat and a 195 × 135 cm sleeping area. Delivery in 2–5 weeks. Pay by debit or credit card, Klarna or Clearpay (subject to eligibility and status).

The Granby above shows how this works on a product page: £899 in the standard fabric, or £1,098 with Easy Clean, with its sizes, features and delivery window listed alongside.

What you give up and what you gain

What you give up:

  • Sitting on it first. You can't test the firmness in person. The best substitute is to measure a sofa you find comfortable and compare it with the sizes on the product page.
  • Seeing the colour in daylight. Screens vary, so a photo is a strong guide rather than a perfect match.
  • Touching the fabric, and a face-to-face conversation. You swap the shop floor for messages and email.

What you gain:

  • Time to measure your real room, door and stairs before you order. A large shop floor can make a sofa look smaller than it will in a terraced front room.
  • The whole range in one place. Every colour and size is listed with its price, sizes and features, not just the pieces that fit on a display floor. The Thorncliff at the top of this page, for example, is listed in 17 colours.
  • Terms in writing. Delivery charges, ways to pay and returns are set out on the site before you order.
  • A legal right to change your mind. When you buy at a distance, such as online, the Consumer Contracts Regulations give you 14 days to cancel, starting the day after delivery. Our returns page explains how that works with us. In a shop, change-of-mind returns depend on that shop's own policy.

Ways to pay are listed on every product page. Every piece in this guide takes card or Klarna, some also take Clearpay (subject to eligibility and status), and a few in-stock pieces add pay on delivery, such as the Goldcrest Corner Sofa Bed with Storage MV83 (£799) and the Verity Corner Sofa Bed With Storage M84 (£779).

Seeing fabrics without a showroom

Here's how to judge fabric from home:

  1. Look through every photo in the gallery. Many product pages include close-up shots as well as the room photo, showing the texture of the fabric, the stitching and the shape of the arm.
  2. Read the fabric description. Each page lists the choice: our standard soft-touch fabric at the listed price, or Easy Clean, a water and pet resistant weave that wipes clean, for a fixed £199 more. If you have dogs, cats or young children, our guide to pet-friendly Easy Clean fabric explains the difference.
  3. Check the colour on more than one screen, in daylight, next to your flooring or curtains.
  4. Ask us. Message our team with the sofa name and colour and what you'd like to know, such as whether a fabric has a visible texture or which of two shades is warmer.
  5. Read the returns policy before you order. Our returns page says you have 14 days to tell us you've changed your mind, starting the day after delivery. The item should be kept in resaleable condition, "with its packaging, legs, fittings and instructions where possible". For a change-of-mind return, we confirm any collection cost with you before booking the collection, there's no restocking fee, and refunds go to the original payment method within 14 days of the item coming back.
Close-up of the grey textured fabric on the arm and chaise end of a Zephyra U-shaped sofa bed, with a light wood floor
Zephyra U Shaped Sofa Bed with Storage i96, £1,398 (view product). A close-up from the product gallery, showing the grey textured fabric on the arm and chaise end. Listed at 351 × 190 × 82 cm, with two storage compartments under the seat bases. Made to order, 12–15 weeks. Pay by debit or credit card or Klarna (subject to eligibility and status).

One honest caveat: the returns page also says that if an item has been used, assembled or damaged in a way that reduces what we can resell it for, we may refund less, and we'll tell you the amount before we collect. Treat the 14 days as a safety net, not a trial period.

Delivery and assembly across Yorkshire

Our delivery page says: "Every order is delivered by our own two-person teams." At checkout you choose one of two free options:

  1. Delivery to your door: "Dropped at your front door, you unpack and set up."
  2. Delivery plus assembly in the room you choose: "We carry it in, build it in the room of your choice and take the packaging away — assembly is free."

Delivery is free to most of mainland UK, and that includes Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Halifax, Huddersfield and the towns in between. There's a £149 per-order surcharge for a short list of postcode areas (AB, DD, EX, FK, IV, KY, PH, PL, SA, TQ and TR), and none of the main West Yorkshire postcode areas (BD, HD, HX, LS and WF) is on it.

The charge to know about is for stairs. Upper floors without a lift cost £49 per order for the 1st to 4th floor, and £199 for the 5th to 12th. That applies to upstairs rooms in houses as well as flats, so a sofa bed for a first-floor spare room or a loft conversion counts. It's free on the ground floor, or on any floor with a lift.

We text you a delivery date and a two-hour window. When the sofa arrives, check it while the delivery team is with you and photograph anything damaged, as our returns page asks.

Many homes here have narrow hallways and turning stairs, so read our guides on whether a corner sofa will fit through your door and getting a sofa up narrow stairs. Our sofa delivery and assembly guide walks through the day itself, and our local guide to sofa beds in Huddersfield covers sizing for terraces and flats.

Questions to ask any seller

Whether you buy from a showroom or online, including from us, these questions help. We've added our own answers.

  • Does the price include VAT, and what's the total delivered price? Ours include VAT. Delivery is free to most of mainland UK, with the charges above listed in advance.
  • Who delivers, and will they build it? Our own two-person teams, with free room-of-choice assembly and the packaging taken away. Stairs without a lift cost £49 or £199 per order.
  • What are the exact sizes? Overall width, depth and height, plus the sleeping area for a sofa bed. Our product pages list them.
  • Can I choose the corner side, and does it cost more? On our corner sofa beds you choose left or right on the product page, and our FAQ says it costs the same either way. If you're unsure which you need, see our guide to left or right hand corner sofas.
  • What's the fabric, and is a stain-resistant version extra? Easy Clean is a fixed £199 upgrade.
  • When will it arrive? The delivery window is shown on each product page, and we text a date and two-hour window before delivery.
  • What if I change my mind, or it arrives damaged? Our returns page sets out both, including who pays for collection.

With a large corner like the Quillon, listed at 268 cm along both sides, our guide to measuring a room for a corner sofa helps you check the fit.

FAQs

Do you have a showroom in West Yorkshire?

No. SOFGO is an online retailer with no showroom. Our registered office is at 248 Lockwood Road, Huddersfield, but it isn't a shop or a showroom. You can order online, or email us and we'll place the order for you.

Do you deliver free to Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Halifax?

Delivery is free to most of mainland UK, and the main West Yorkshire postcode areas (BD, HD, HX, LS and WF) aren't on our £149 surcharge list. Upper floors without a lift cost £49 (1st to 4th floor) or £199 (5th to 12th floor) per order.

Can I see the fabric before I buy?

Use the gallery photos, including close-ups, and the fabric description, and message us with questions. If it isn't right, you have 14 days from the day after delivery to tell us, as our returns page explains.

How can I pay?

By debit or credit card or Klarna, with Clearpay on some pieces and pay on delivery on some in-stock pieces, as shown on each product page. Klarna and Clearpay are subject to eligibility and status.

Is buying direct cheaper than a showroom?

We can't speak for other retailers' prices. Compare like for like: the same size, features and fabric, and the total delivered price including assembly and any stair charges.
