How to Remove Dog Hair From a Fabric Sofa
By Alex at SOFGO ·

If your dog sheds, the sofa is usually where you notice it first. Hair settles into the weave, gathers along seams and turns up on your clothes the moment you sit down. You do not need a cupboard full of gadgets: a short daily habit, a few simple tools and a proper clean every few weeks will keep most fabric sofas looking cared for, even with a heavy shedder.
Below: a daily routine, the tools that help, safe deep cleaning, ways to cut down shedding on the sofa, and what to look for in a new fabric. Prices were checked on live SOFGO product pages on 6 October 2026.
A note on the photos. The pictures show corner sofas from our Exclusive Designer Collection, taken from each sofa's own product page. They are made to order (delivery 12–15 weeks) and are fixed corner sofas, not sofa beds. Every sofa bed we mention is named in the text and linked to its own page.
Quick daily routine
Little and often beats a big fortnightly clear-up. Loose hair lifts easily; hair that has been sat on for days gets pressed into the fabric. A two-minute routine for most fabric sofas:
- Shake out any throws outdoors, or at least away from the sofa, before you start.
- Sweep the seats with a rubber glove or rubber pet brush, working in one direction. Hair rolls into clumps you can pick up by hand.
- Run a lint roller over the arms, the front edge of the seats and any cushion your dog favours.
- Check the seams and the corner join, where hair collects first. A quick pass with the glove usually pulls it out.
- Fold the throw back into place so it takes tomorrow's hair rather than the cover.
If you only have time for one step, make it the rubber glove. Slightly damp (not wet) rubber grips hair well on most tight weaves. Wring it out until no water drips, and let the fabric dry before anyone sits down.
Tools that work
You do not need specialist kit, and we are not going to recommend brands. These general types of tool are worth having:
- Vacuum with an upholstery tool. The flat, wide head is gentle on fabric. Use it on a lower suction setting if your vacuum has one, and work along the grain of the fabric.
- Crevice tool. Essential for the gap between seat and back cushions, the corner join and any channel stitching.
- Motorised pet brush head. Useful on tightly woven fabric. Check your sofa's care label first, and avoid using one on delicate or long-pile finishes.
- Rubber brush, glove or squeegee. The fastest hand tool for gathering hair into clumps.
- Lint roller. Good for quick touch-ups on arms and cushions and for finishing after vacuuming.
- Microfibre cloth. Barely damp, it lifts the last fine hairs on smoother finishes.
Avoid stiff wire grooming brushes, which are made for coats, not upholstery, and can pull the fibres. If in doubt, try any new tool on a hidden area first, such as the back of the sofa.

Deep clean every few weeks
Every few weeks, or after a heavy moulting spell, give the sofa a fuller clean. Go gently: most damage to upholstery comes from too much water, too much heat or too much scrubbing.
Start with the care label. Look for the cleaning code on the label under the seat cushions or the base. Many upholstery labels use letter codes: W usually means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent-based cleaning only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only. If there is no label, or you are unsure, ask the retailer before using any liquid.
Then work through it in order:
- Remove the loose cushions if your sofa has them, and vacuum the deck, the gaps and the corner join underneath. This is where most hidden hair and grit gathers.
- Vacuum every surface with the upholstery tool, then go back along every seam with the crevice tool.
- Turn or rotate the cushions where the design allows, so wear and hair spread evenly.
- Spot-clean marks only if the label allows. Use a little mild soap in water on a clean cloth, wrung out until barely damp. Blot, do not rub, and work from the edge of a mark inwards.
- Patch test first. Try any cleaning method on a hidden area and let it dry fully before tackling the visible part.
- Never soak the fabric. Water that reaches the foam takes a long time to dry and can leave marks or odours. Open a window and let the sofa dry completely before use.
Avoid steam cleaners, hot water and household sprays unless the care label clearly allows them, and only machine-wash covers if the label says they are washable. For a big or stubborn job, a professional upholstery cleaner is the safest option.
Dog hair on sofa cushions needs a little extra care. Vacuum both faces and all four edges, because hair works into the piping and the zip area. A rubber glove pulled along the seam lines lifts what the vacuum misses.

Reducing hair in the first place
The easiest hair to clean is the hair that never reaches the sofa.
- Brush your dog regularly, ideally outdoors, and more often during seasonal moults. Loose undercoat brushed out in the garden is undercoat that does not end up in the weave.
- Give the sofa a washable layer. A throw or blanket on your dog's favourite spot catches most of the hair and is far easier to wash than upholstery.
- Offer a comfortable alternative. A dog bed near the sofa, in a spot where your dog can still see you, often reduces the urge to claim the cushions.
- Keep a towel by the door for damp coats after walks. Wet hair sticks to fabric more readily than dry hair.
- Vacuum floors and rugs too. Hair on the floor gets carried back up by paws and feet.
- Wash throws and dog bedding often, shaking them out outdoors first.
If your dog suddenly sheds far more than usual, or has bald patches or sore skin, it is worth speaking to your vet.
Fabric choice for heavy shedders
If you are choosing a new sofa, the cover makes a real difference to how much work hair takes. No upholstery fabric is hair-proof or claw-proof, but some are far easier to live with.
- Tight, even weaves let hair sit on the surface where a rubber brush or vacuum can lift it.
- Short, smooth finishes release hair more easily than deep or textured ones.
- Loose loops, bouclé, teddy and long-pile fabrics hold hair in the texture and can catch claws. They are lovely to touch but take more effort with a shedder.
- Colour matters as much as weave. Pick a mid tone close to your dog's coat. Cream shows dark hair; black and deep navy show pale hair.
SOFGO's Easy Clean upgrade is a water- and pet-resistant weave that wipes clean and is tougher on paws, claws and spills. It is a fixed £199 upgrade on every product page we checked. It is not waterproof and it will not stop shedding, but a wipe-clean surface makes damp paws and everyday marks easier to deal with. FAQs
What is the fastest way to remove dog hair from a sofa?
A rubber glove or rubber pet brush, swept in one direction, gathers hair into clumps in seconds. Follow with a lint roller on the arms and seat edges.
How do I remove pet hair from sofa cushions?
Take the cushions off, vacuum both faces and all edges with an upholstery tool, then run a rubber glove along the seams and piping. Vacuum the deck underneath before putting them back.
Can I use water to get dog hair off a sofa?
A slightly damp rubber glove or microfibre cloth helps on many fabrics, but check the cleaning code on the care label first and never soak the cover. Let the fabric dry fully before use.
Is any sofa fabric hair-proof?
No. Tight, smooth weaves in a colour close to your dog's coat make hair much easier to remove and less noticeable, but every fabric will collect some hair.
Will Easy Clean stop dog hair sticking?
No. Easy Clean is a water- and pet-resistant weave that wipes clean and is tougher on paws, claws and spills. It helps with damp paws and marks; regular brushing and vacuuming still do the work on hair.
How often should I deep clean a sofa with a dog?
Most homes do well with a quick daily sweep, a thorough vacuum once a week and a fuller clean every few weeks, more often during heavy moults.
