Best Sofa Fabric for Dogs: A Practical UK Guide

If you share a sofa with a dog, fabric choice matters as much as size or shape. Hair, muddy paws, the odd accident and everyday climbing all land on the same few surfaces. The good news is you do not need a “special” pet sofa — you need a weave that cleans, a colour that forgives, and a clear view of what water resistance can and cannot do.

Weave, texture and colour
Tighter weaves usually cope better with dogs than loose, loopy or long-pile surfaces. A close weave is harder for claws to catch and easier to vacuum. Texture changes how hair sits. Smooth or short, even textures release hair more cleanly with a rubber brush or vacuum. High-pile, deep chenille and pronounced bouclé loops hold hair and can snag. Mid-tone, slightly textured weaves often hide everyday wear better than a flat pale cloth.
Colour is half the battle with shedders. Mid greys, warm taupes, soft greens and ochres disguise light and dark hair better than pure cream or jet black. Water resistance vs water proof
These two phrases get mixed up, and the difference matters.
Water resistant means liquid tends to sit on the surface long enough for you to blot it. That is the useful everyday behaviour for muddy paws and tipped drinks.
Waterproof would mean liquid cannot pass through. Upholstery fabric on a living-room sofa is not a tent. Even a strong performance weave can wet through if a spill is left, or if a large accident soaks into the foam.

Fabrics to think twice about
None of these are “banned” — they just ask more of you with dogs.
- Heavy bouclé and long loop piles — stylish, but loops can catch claws and hold hair. Fine for a quiet room; harder as the main family sofa.
- Pale plush and deep chenille — soft to sit on, quick to show marks and to hold shed hair. Mid-tone, tighter chenille is usually kinder than a pale, open pile.
- Very dark, flat cloth — can show light-coloured hair and every dust speck.
- Delicate dress fabrics — anything marketed mainly for a showroom look rather than wipe-clean living.
Is chenille good for dogs? Often it feels lovely, and a denser mid-tone chenille can work. Pale, plush chenille is usually the weaker choice for heavy shedders: hair beds into the pile and claws find purchase more easily than on a tight flat weave. - A washable throw on the favourite seat catches hair and wet paws.
- A dog bed nearby reduces the urge to claim the sofa as the only soft spot.
- Blot spills quickly with a clean cloth; avoid soaking the cover so water does not reach the foam.
- Vacuum regularly — a soft brush or rubber grooming glove lifts hair before it mats into the weave.
